'Hands Off Our NHS'
Representatives from Somerset County UNISON got up at 4:30am on Sunday 29th September to join the Unite bus heading for Manchester for the 'Hands Off Our NHS' March and Rally to coincide with the Conservative Party Conference.
It was a beautiful sunny day as more then 50,000 people gathered to make their voices heard - the largest demonstration ever held in Manchester. Noise levels rose as we approached the Conference centre but no Tories in sight - they stayed within the centre but I am certain they still heard us!
The rally held after the march had some excellent speakers including our very own Dave Prentis, Len MCcluskey of Unite, Owen Jones the Independant writer and NHS workers with views of what it is like working in hospitals with all the changes that are being forced upon them. You might not have heard much about the march through the media as there was very little coverage on the television but check out the national UNISON website or YouTube to see what it was like on the day.
Aneurin Bevin said 'the NHS will last as long as there are folk left with the faith to fight for it.' We need to fight for it now.
